Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were dwelling in the region undoubtedly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a lot greater area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
