Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were living in the area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far greater area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has seen greater development in the recent past.
