Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
