Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a substantially greater area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could perhaps have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
