Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage found in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not reported until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a lot greater area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed improved development in modern times.
