Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the locale most probably from the sixth century. The village as it was was not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far wider area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
