Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed mean that they were residing in the area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing at this time is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially bigger area than only the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
