Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found reveal that they were residing in the region perhaps since the sixth century. The village existing at that time is not documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen greater development in current times.
