Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the area undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The village as such is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way larger area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put in until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed greater development in current times.
