Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not cited until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a significantly larger area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
