Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the vicinity undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
