The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was was not described till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a far wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be applied prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
