Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage found in the area show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way bigger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
