Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lays very close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed denote that they were settling the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
