Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not reported till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot wider area than merely the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put in before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
