Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the region very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
