Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the region most likely since the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way bigger area than only the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the following decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
