Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
