Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up near by offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the region very likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a substantially wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the past several years.
