Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and relics discovered mean that they were inhabiting the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could possibly have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be included until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has seen increased development in current times.
