Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
