Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the region most probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably bigger area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
