Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were staying in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
