Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a much wider area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be appended up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
