Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins found near by offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts discovered mean that they were dwelling in the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far larger area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen increased development in the last few years.
