Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage discovered in the area give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the area perhaps from the sixth century. The commune existing then was not observed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a far greater area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
