Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins found in the area show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were staying in the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The village as such wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a considerably bigger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
