Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were settling the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not listed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the coming decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
