Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the region most probably from the 6th Century. The village existing then was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much bigger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow.
