Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins discovered nearby offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed denote that they were inhabiting the region probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time was not documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
