Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Based in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were staying in the region almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a substantially greater area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the development of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand.
