Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far greater area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding years and the development of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
