Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage found in close proximity show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The commune as such was not cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a lot greater area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following decades and the building of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen increased development in recent times.
