Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the succeeding generations and the development of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
