Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins picked up in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market during the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were settling the local area in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put in before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
