Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a historical past harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and relics discovered indicate that they were settling the area most likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the coming decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
