Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lies near to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins found near by show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not referred to till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in recent times.
