Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were staying in the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot larger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming years and the development of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
