Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins found near by give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were living in the area in all probability since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't referred to until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
