Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins picked up nearby give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were dwelling in the region undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a significantly wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
