Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were dwelling in the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly wider area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
