Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered nearby give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were staying in the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time was not referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
