The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon reveal that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably larger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
