Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the vicinity possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a significantly greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen greater development in modern times.
