Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed denote that they were settling the local area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way greater area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't inserted before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
