Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were settling the local area probably from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't described until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
