Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located next to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins unearthed nearby give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the locale most probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen improved development in current times.
