Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were residing in the region almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time wasn't referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially bigger area than just the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the coming generations and the building of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed improved development in the last few years.
