The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much greater area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
