Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins unearthed nearby offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered denote that they were living in the vicinity possibly since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a much greater area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be applied prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
