Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins found near by offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
