Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much greater area than merely the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
