Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed near by show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a substantially bigger area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
