Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the local area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not documented till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much greater area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
