Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen increased development in modern times.
