Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were settling the local area most probably from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time is not documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen improved development in the past few decades.
