Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins found near by offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a lot greater area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
