Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the locale most likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be included prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
