Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a much larger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
