Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not included until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
