Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins picked up in the area give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were staying in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way wider area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the coming years and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen improved development in the past few years.
