Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably wider area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the following generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
