Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins found in close proximity give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered reveal that they were living in the area possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a way wider area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the coming generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
