Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the region perhaps since the sixth century. The village as such is not discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a significantly greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
