Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was then is not observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
