Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered indicate that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a significantly larger area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
