Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the area more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not documented till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen increased development in the past several years.
