Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the locale more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way larger area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's seen improved development in the past few years.
