Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially wider area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
