Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon imply that they were settling the area very likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a much wider area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen improved development in current times.
