Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were dwelling in the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far greater area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
