Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins stumbled on in the area offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were living in the locale in all probability from the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far bigger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
