Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not observed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far greater area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
