Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage discovered near by show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were residing in the region probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
