Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
