Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins found nearby give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the locale possibly from the sixth century. The commune as such was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the following years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed increased development in recent times.
