Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a way bigger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
