Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were staying in the area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as such is not discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far greater area than simply the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop.
