Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by give proof of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon reveal that they were inhabiting the local area most probably since the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially bigger area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
