Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up indicate that they were residing in the region probably from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not referred to till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a lot larger area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the development of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
