Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the region possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far bigger area than just the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
