Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed near by give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered indicate that they were residing in the region most probably since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
