Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon indicate that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a considerably bigger area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
