Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were living in the area most likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a much wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the development of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's witnessed greater development in the past several years.
